St George's Day celebrations

On April 23rd, many people across England celebrate the country’s patron saint St George.

Patron saints are chosen as special protectors/guardians. England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland all have their own patron saints.

St George - the history

There are many stories and myths about St George but the most common one is that George was a Christian Roman Soldier who moved to the middle east with his mother after the death of his father. George didn’t like how Rome treated Christians and so he started a protest which ended badly for him. He was put in prison and because he had no desire of turning away his beliefs, he was executed.

There is a story about St George slaying a dragon too. The story is that George went to a town called Silene in Libya. There was a dragon that kept on being fed sheep by the town’s people so the dragon wouldn’t attack any humans. One day the town ran out of sheep and they had to start sacrificing people! The King’s daughter was nominated to be next eaten by the Dragon but that never happened as St George came to the rescue!

The Flag of St George, a red cross on a white background, is England’s national flag. Even though St George wasn’t actually English and it is believed that he never actually stepped foot in England, he still remains as England’s patron saint.
